This manuscript is not a transcription of a printed handbook but an original pedagogical work. Text and image form a coherent programme through which a pupil could learn both the theory of blazon and the visual construction of arms.
Its attribution to Mark Anthony Porny places it within the cultivated Franco-British world of late eighteenth-century Eton, where heraldry remained a practical language of lineage and privilege.
The quality of the watercolours, the dated paper and the volume’s British provenance make it a direct record of how heraldic knowledge was taught and transmitted.
