The 1613 Lyon edition is the first complete, systematic collection of the writings of Justus Lipsius. Philosophy, philology, political theory, antiquarian research and correspondence appear as parts of a single project.
Lipsius’s revival of Stoicism offered an ethic of constancy and self-command to a Europe marked by religious conflict and political instability.
The engraved portrait, title and numerous historical and military illustrations give the two folio volumes a powerful visual dimension, complementing one of the most influential bodies of scholarship of the late Renaissance.
